This weekend, Woodbridge boutique, Darcy B, is celebrating a 12-year collaboration with British fashion designer James Lakeland.
The store has marked the occasion by launching his 2018 Autumn/Winter Collection at the store, and opening a new room devoted to the designer’s stunning tailored lines.
Making the celebrations even more unique in Suffolk however, was the fact that James was himself able to make a special visit to the market town, and tell customers all about his inspirations and passion.
Denise Potter, owner of Darcy B, has known James for over 15 years, and is herself a huge fan of his garments.
“James really understands what women want from clothes.
“Our customers want beautiful pieces that can be worn to multiple occasions, from the office to evenings out, and even weekends.
“It’s no longer sensible to buy a coat that can only be worn for work, it needs to look as good over jeans as it does over a dress.”
Over a glass of champagne, James shared how he approaches the design process that has made his clothes enduring classics, and that bold bespoke prints are always key to his collections.
He explained that earlier in his career he designed clothes for Burberry and Harrods, before launching his own range in 1992.
Now in his 25th year of business, James still designs for women who want to invest in key pieces that will last for many seasons.
Showing customers a stunning duster coat, he explained that it was cut from around 45 individual pieces to give exactly the perfect shape and form, when worn.
He said: “I have wanted to create this coat for some time but it takes work to get the design right.
“I start by cutting and laying all the pieces by hand, until I get the look I want. I then work with Italian manufacturers because they understand the finish that my customers demand.”
Of Denise, he said: “She really knows what her customer wants and I value her judgement. I need to work with people that I can trust.”
