Nicola Weldon

Staff Profile

A sporty solicitor with a proud passion for Suffolk, she once had aspirations of becoming a PE teacher.

Today, Nicola Weldon is not only a popular partner at Gotelee, but she’s also keeping those athletic ambitions alive – as a qualified coach.

How long have you been at Gotelee Solicitors?

2 years, recently celebrated with delicious sausage rolls from The Cake Shop in Woodbridge.

What was your prior practising or educational experience which brought you to Gotelee?

I grew up in Suffolk and returned to the county after spending 3 years at a law firm in Bromley, Kent. I subsequently worked in a law firm in Ipswich, progressing to Partner and Head of the Private Client department there, until joining Gotelee’s two years ago.

Had you always wanted to go into law?

No, growing up I always wanted to be a PE teacher! However, I studied law at university and haven’t looked back since. I originally had thoughts about specialising in environmental law, but fell in love with Private Client work. It is an area of law that enables you to help individuals and families plan for the future and at difficult times in their lives.

Tell me a little about the area of specialism you have at Gotelee?

Private Client covers a wide range of work including tax and estate planning, wills, administration of estates, powers of attorney, court of protection work and trusts. It is really varied, which is something I enjoy.

And what are the key issues concerning that field of law which are particularly significant for businesses / individuals at the moment?

There have recently been some changes to inheritance tax, which may require individuals to update their wills. Quite often, clients will get in touch if they read something in the press or following conversations with friends and families and they wonder whether it may be applicable to them.

Do you see a ‘typical’ kind of client at the firm?

No. Each client is individual and treated as such.

What’s been your greatest career moment to date?

Being the Partner in charge of the team at Deben Mill and now the new Woodbridge team.

What makes Gotelee such a special place to work?

It has a great bunch of people working in it, who care about helping one another and providing excellent service for our clients.

You’ll now be part of the new Woodbridge team at Deben Mill. What do you love most about that area of Suffolk?

The shops and the scenery on my drive to and from the office each day.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I am married with 2 daughters. I love outdoor activities, especially running and have recently become a coach at Ipswich Jaffa Running Club.

Do you support any particular charities or causes?

Personally, I have participated in a number of charitable events and have raised money for charity in the past and continue to donate on an adhoc basis. I tend to direct the majority of my charitable giving as donations to friends who are running in various marathons! Through work I strongly support local charities that give help and advice to the older generation and individuals and their families living with dementia. I, and the majority of my colleagues at Deben Mill, are Dementia Friends.

How should anyone interested in your expertise make contact with you?
