Mum, wife, and charity enthusiast, Rachel Dawson couldn’t be more delighted to be based in the Woodbridge office and embarking on a ‘new era’ with her colleagues there.
She tells us about her route into the world of law, and about juggling legal study with parenthood!
How long have you been at Gotelee Solicitors?
What was your prior practising or educational experience which brought you to Gotelee?
Had you always wanted to go into law? (reference things about what appeals about the area to you and whether you’d always studied with that path in mind)
I always had an interest in the law and joined the industry when I was 19, straight from Sixth Form. Immediately, I started studying to qualify as a Lawyer, via the CILEx route. This allows you to earn-as-you-learn and gain valuable practical experience and avoid high university debt.
Tell me a little about the area of specialism you have at Gotelee?
I work in the Private Client team. This includes Probate, Wills, Inheritance Tax Planning, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorneys and Court of Protection matters.
And what are the key issues concerning that field of law which are particularly significant for businesses / individuals at the moment?
I don’t think everyone appreciates the implications of bad estate planning and badly drafted Wills. That’s what makes the work we do here so important, because our work doesn’t just affect the client, but their future generations.
Do you see a ‘typical’ kind of client at the firm?
No not at all. All of our clients have different needs and that’s what makes the job interesting.
What’s been your greatest career moment to date?
Studying towards my legal qualification whilst working and raising a family wasn’t easy, so when I finally qualified in 2013 this was a huge milestone for me.
What makes Gotelee such a special place to work?
The people. We have a great team here. I also believe the firm has a very good reputation in the area and I’m delighted to be a part of it.
You’ll now be part of the new Woodbridge team at Deben Mill. What do you love most about that area of Suffolk?
I love being in the countryside, so working in a market town which is surrounded by countryside is perfect for me!
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love spending time with my husband and our 2 boys. Enjoying family day trips, holidays, and making memories!
Do you support any particular charities or causes?
Gotelee supports a lot of charities. The charity I’m most passionate about is the GeeWizz Charity which is a local charity who prides themselves on 100% transparent giving. GeeWizz focuses on providing specialist equipment to children and young adults living in Suffolk and Norfolk.
