ELEVATOR PITCH – TELL US WHAT YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS DOES IN A NUTSHELL:
We print suave & sophisticated quotes in frames & phone cases. Further to this, we’re about to branch out to other products including cufflinks.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR BUSINESS’S USP OVER YOUR PEERS?
The Brand, without a doubt. When we came up with the idea of the business, we focused all of our efforts on developing a business that people wanted to be a part of.
We have a unique story about Chatham Chaps, from the meaning behind the name to the logo itself, as well as what the colours we have chosen.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST BUSINESS CHALLENGE SO FAR?
When we set it up, we did everything ourselves and did it cheaply – big mistake. We ordered frames from a company, ordered the prints from another, purchased packaging from another. When we got an order from a stockist and he didn’t think they were up to scratch, but still offered to purchase them, we said no. And proceeded to throw out thousands of pounds of brand new stock – this was our wake-up call. We have now partnered with another company who fulfils our orders and ensure that quality is of paramount importance.
AND YOUR GREATEST SUCCESS?
We hosted our inaugural Chatham Chaps Soiree in 2017 and were delighted by the support we received from friends, family, customers and many more associates. It was an invite-only event and we gained sponsorship from many local Suffolk businesses, and one global brand – Lexus!

NATURALLY, YOU WANT TO REACH CUSTOMERS AND SUPPLIERS AND THOSE WHO CAN HELP YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS SUCCEED. WHO MIGHT YOU WANT TO HEAR FROM (TYPES OF SERVICES OR BUSINESSES)?
Our products look amazing in bars, hotels, artisan coffee shops, restaurants and retail stores and businesses so the likes of them would be ideal. Furthermore, we’re also keen to expand our stockists and would welcome conversations with small businesses in East Anglia and beyond.
WHEN YOU FEEL TROUBLED OR ‘BEATEN’ AT ANY STAGE IN BUSINESS LIFE, WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO RALLYING YOURSELF?
Talking to someone, having a coffee (or something stronger) and having an open honest chat. Many times, we have tunnel vision looking at a project or problem and when you open it up and gain new insights, I’m left with a fresh perspective.
DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR, OR HAVE YOU USED ONE? IF SO, HOW WAS THAT?
I’ve never had an “official mentor” and think it naïve to restrict yourself to just one. I take advice and learn from a range of individuals both in my work and personal life.
At present, I’m the Ambassador for Education & Skills with IoD Suffolk and a Governor at an Ipswich High School. Both boards have highly experienced professionals; I draw on their life experiences and skills to help guide me in my career.
Furthermore, with a potential investment opportunity on the horizon, I will be mentored and supported by our investor.
WHAT’S CHANGING ABOUT YOUR INDUSTRY THAT MAKES IT SUCH A GOOD SPACE TO BE IN?
Well firstly, everyone dabbles in the creative industry. And, that’s what makes it so bright, exciting and challenging. You must constantly update products, meet new trends, apply to new audiences. It’s exhausting, but it’s exciting and keep me on my toes!
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WANTING TO ENTER YOUR INDUSTRY SPACE?
Have a USP. End.
