NAME: Bal Kaur Howard
YOUR BUSINESS / ORGANISATION: Bal Kaur Howard Training (BKH Training)
YOUR TITLE IN THAT BUSINESS: Owner / Director
WHEN DID THE BUSINESS LAUNCH? 1st September 2016
ELEVATOR PITCH – TELL US WHAT YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS DOES IN A NUTSHELL:
I deliver “Safeguarding Training”: Safeguarding Solutions for Professionals in specialist subject areas of;
- Domestic Abuse, DASH Risk Assessment, MARAC
- Honour Based Abuse (Forced Marriage & FGM)
- Radicalisation / Extremism
- Modern Slavery / Trafficking,
- Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE)
- Addiction / Substance Misuse
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR BUSINESS’S USP OVER YOUR PEERS?
I offer a range of in-depth specialist training for in-house training. No need to buy in separate trainers/services for each of the subjects.
There is not a single provider that offers the range of subject areas I offer under one roof at an affordable price.
For example, for an inset school training day, I am able to offer CSE / FGM / Radicalisation (Prevent Duty) for a day’s training – the school does not pay a different specialist trainer for each subject.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST BUSINESS CHALLENGE SO FAR?
My biggest challenge was having the belief in myself that running my own business was a possibility and having the courage to break free from full-time employment.
AND YOUR GREATEST SUCCESS?
Every single time I deliver a training session to a group of practitioners, it’s a knowing those professionals now have the knowledge and tools to make a difference to someone’s life and save a life – for me; there is no price on a life.
I suppose being recognised for the work I have done and the work I do.
I was nominated for the IKWRO “True Honour” Awards (Iranian & Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation) in 2012 & 2014. Nominated for the 1st Suffolk Black Minority Ethnic (BME) Awards for “New Business of the Year” and winner of “The Judges Special Award” in 2016. More recently, being selected as one of the “20 influential women” in Suffolk
WHAT DOES THE NEXT 12 MONTHS HAVE IN STORE FOR YOU?
This sounds really terrible and I know one should have a business plan. I don’t, I am going to go with the flow in the next 12 months – see what comes along.
If anything, I would like to pass my driving test in the next 12 months!
AND IN FIVE YEARS TIME YOU’D LIKE THE BUSINESS TO?
I honestly have no business plans of where I’d like the business to be. I would, however, like to get to a position to be able to offer schools training free of charge for the children on “Healthy Relationships”.
On a personal level, I’d like to grow spiritually and go deeper into silence to find true peace. Sometime in the future, my ultimate goal is to have a year in silence.
NATURALLY, YOU WANT TO REACH CUSTOMERS AND SUPPLIERS AND THOSE WHO CAN HELP YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS SUCCEED. WHO MIGHT YOU WANT TO HEAR FROM (TYPES OF SERVICES OR BUSINESSES)?
- Adult Safeguarding Teams – County Councils, Boroughs, Hospitals, Health, GPs, Schools, Social Workers, Police, Voluntary Sector, Support agencies, Parents, Charities, to name a few.
- Children Safeguarding Teams – as above
- Learning & Workforce Development Teams
- Clinical Commissioning Groups
- Acute Trusts
- Public Speaking at Events & Conferences
Really, any organisation/individual who wish to train their staff or themselves who deal with vulnerable groups, both children and adults.
WHEN YOU FEEL TROUBLED OR ‘BEATEN’ AT ANY STAGE IN BUSINESS LIFE, WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO RALLYING YOURSELF?
Meditation – I wouldn’t be without it like I wouldn’t be without food or water.
DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR, OR HAVE YOU USED ONE? IF SO, HOW WAS THAT?
I have the most amazing business mentor that one could wish for! I love working with him.
I also have the most amazing spiritual teacher too – an Indian Jesuit Catholic Priest!
I find both truly inspirational.
WHAT’S CHANGING ABOUT YOUR INDUSTRY THAT MAKES IT SUCH A GOOD SPACE TO BE IN?
“Safeguarding is EVERYONE’s responsibility” and sadly any form of abuse is not going to go away – the most vulnerable will always need protecting, as they cannot protect themselves.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WANTING TO ENTER YOUR INDUSTRY SPACE?
There is always room for one more business – go for it!
